Overcoming Barriers and Discrimination
When people with mental disabilities participate in Special Olympics, the community takes pride in that achievement. But when the same people need advocacy because they are subject to long-term suspension, illegal seclusion and restraint or termination of needed services, the reality is that they often encounter barriers and discrimination. CLA practices exclusively in the field of mental disability law to help remove such barriers and eliminate discrimination.

Disability Rights North Carolina protects the rights of our citizens with disabilities

DRNC is a private, tax-exempt, non-profit corporation that began by offering legal representation to children and adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities. With the law as our tool, our work helped to improve the lives of thousands of individuals. As the new Protection and Advocacy organization for North Carolina, we now serve people with all types of disabilities and many more lives will be changed.

DRNC is available for:
Representation of clients with disabilities.
Public education and training on issues affecting people with disabilities.
Technical assistance to lawyers and lay advocates.
Contracts with advocacy and service organizations for training, referrals, technical assistance, litigation and special projects.

Inquiries about Legal Representation Disability Rights North Carolina provides very specialized legal assistance. Our current priorities are cases with potential for systemic change and include: Special Education, Abuse, Neglect or Exploitation of people with disabilities, Denial of Medicaid Benefits, Alternative to Guardianship and Limited Guardianship.
